Refreshing a CAD Lab in a Budget Crunch

If your school is like many schools today that are experiencing the budget crunch, you may be left thinking that you will be stuck with the same old technology in your school for the next few years. Due to groundbreaking technology, this may not be the case.

Let's take a CAD lab for example. Every year many CAD software companies come out with the latest and greatest version of their software. You are thinking that you want to keep up to date so your students have a familiarity with the latest technology versus an older version, otherwise they may be less competitive once they enter the job market. This software can be somewhat expensive and with the continuously increasing system requirements, you may have realized that you need to refresh your computers as well. What do you do? Purchase the new CAD software or upgrade the hardware? You don't have room for both... or do you?

Ideally you would upgrade the software and refresh the computers. Although your budget does not allow for this, why not take a shortcut and make it happen without breaking your budget? There have been some great advancements in the desktop virtualization industry, multiseat desktop virtualization to be exact. Software such as SoftXpand 2011 can turn a single desktop PC into multiple independent workstations without sacrificing performance. This means that you could take a CAD lab of 30 students and only buy 4 or 5 PCs to power that entire lab!

Problem solved. You can now purchase the latest and greatest version of your CAD software AND refresh your PCs without bursting your budget.
